1Commenting on video game violence is about as uncool as you can get, but the images that people immerse themselves in of gore, death, and murder is remarkable. It's not just the blowing up your friends in a sci-fi or fantasy setting, where the brutality is cartoonish. But in Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row, you choose a path of sociopathy, randomly killing whoever gets in your way. Are the games entertaining? Definitely. Is it fun to kill people in an imaginary world (that's made to be as realistic as possible) and live out a criminal life? Yep, it certainly is. It's a rush. But that rush we get is because our subconscious isn't good at telling the difference between reality and fantasy, it feels these actions as real. The images, noise, and action that our rational mind says are "just a game" are taken as real by the subconscious. That's why we get the adrenaline from the game. We get to engage our inner caveman, our bestial natures. But is there any kind of psychological price to this devolution? Does spending so much time immersed in the altered state of a virtual world where human life means absolutely nothing (at least symbolically) have any kind of real-life implications?
